Birth Certificates and Registering Newborns

Service Ontario should be your first stop

My constituency office receives a lot of calls from new parents about the process of registering their newborns and obtaining their birth certificates. offers a direct, fast, and secure source to order your birth certificate online at the lowest-cost. You can choose between regular and premium service for your application, with delivery times between 5-15 days depending on your choice. With an online application, you will also be able to track the progress of your order and receive a money-back service guarantee. The cost to get a birth certificate is:

  • $25 for first-time short-form certificates;
  • $35 for first-time long-form certificate;
  • $35 for short-form replacement;
  • $45 for long-form replacement.

There are third-party companies who offer online applications for Ontario birth certificates; these companies must have a statement on their website that clearly states they are not affiliated with the government. Please make sure to check that you are ordering directly through Service Ontario before you buy. Only government-authorized websites and partners can use the Service Ontario name and the Government of Ontario logo.

The 4-in-1 Newborn Registration Bundle offers new parents the option to register the birth of their child, apply for a birth certificate, a social insurance number, and sign-up for Canada (Ontario) child benefits with a single application. Birth certificates—both long-form and short-form—can also be ordered online.

Beginning on April 15, 2015, newborns can benefit from birth certificates with new design and material to help protect them from identity theft, forgery, and loss. The new security features will make birth certificates easy to check for authenticity and hard to counterfeit. More information is available here.

Older certificates remain valid and do not need to be replaced. Birth certificates are important documents used to get other ID. Keep yours in a safe place and do not carry it with you day-to-day.

Similar services are also available online at Service Ontario for ordering marriage certificates and death certificates.

If you have any questions about ordering your identity documents, please contact my office at 613-547-2385 or
